On Friday, representatives of the Polish government, the US government, and Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego signed a $4 billion loan guarantee agreement. Funding from the US Foreign Military Financing programme will support the further modernization of the Polish army.
The ceremony was attended by, among others, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and US Under Secretary of State Brent T. Christensen. BGK was represented by First Vice President Prof. Marta Postuła.
"This agreement is the fifth in a row, and the first prepared jointly with the administration of the new President Trump, giving Poland a total amount of US support for military purchases over the last two years of USD 15 billion. As the operator of the Armed Forces Support Fund, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego plays a key role in this process. The agreement is also an example of diligence and thriftiness in the management of public funds—the cost of today's loan from the FMF is preferential and, given today's market conditions, lower than the cost at which the State Treasury directly finances in US dollars. Thanks to this, we can be sure that every zloty of the Polish taxpayer is spent in the best possible way, and the cooperation between us and the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Finance brings real results." - Prof. Marta Postuła, First Vice-President of BGK.
"Once again, we have received guarantees from the US government, confirmed by a decision of the US Congress. We are very proud and grateful for this. We are ready to use this money to the best of our ability for the transformation and modernization of the Polish army, for building the strongest defense capabilities in Europe." - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense.
"This is proof of the strength of our alliance and Poland's growing role in defense activities within NATO and Europe. In times of growing threats, Poland demonstrates steadfastness, leadership, and strategic vision. The purchase of Patriot, HIMARS, Apache, and other weapons systems helps NATO's eastern flank build modern armed forces."- Brent T. Christensen, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security.
Foreign Military Financing is a US government programme that provides loans, guarantees, and grants to US allies and partners for the purchase of American military equipment. In April this year, as part of an aid package for Ukraine, Congress increased the funds available under the FMF for NATO allies to $6.7 billion.
