400 million euros for Bielefeld University - NRW.BANK finances the new building of the Faculty of Medicine of Ostwestfalen-Lippe at Bielefeld University

NRW.BANK has granted the University of Bielefeld a loan to build the first medical faculty in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. The EUR 400 million loan will be used to finance the necessary investments in the building infrastructure. The promotional bank for North Rhine-Westphalia is thus making an important contribution to strengthening the federal state as a location for university medicine.

“The establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in Bielefeld is a key infrastructure measure of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, which we are pleased to support with our loan,” says Gabriela Pantring, member of NRW.BANK’s Managing Board. “It creates a new attractive research and educational offer as well as additional places to study. With its focus on general medicine and practical training, the faculty wants to encourage students to decide to set up a doctor’s practice in the region after graduation.”

Extensive investments are required to build up the Faculty of Medicine. The project plan provides for a total credit volume of EUR 465 million, divided into two separate financings. The second partial financing of almost EUR 404 million is now made available by NRW.BANK. The State of North Rhine-Westphalia not only assumes the default guarantees for both financings in full, but also contributes to the refinancing.

The NRW.BANK loan will be used to finance various construction measures to create the space needed for facilities such as seminar rooms, research labs, lecture halls and offices. The space for the medical faculty is being created on the campus and in the immediate vicinity of the main university building as a “multi-building solution” consisting of new buildings and conversions. Sixty students are expected to start studying here in the 2021/2022 winter term. In the final stage (as of the 2025/2026 winter term), some 300 students per year will begin their medical studies at Bielefeld University.
