New BGK report on 3W: this market worth is almost USD 5 billion in Poland

At the 2nd 3W Congress, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, the initiator of the 3W idea, presented the report on the sector comprising the three life resources – water, hydrogen and carbon. The study shows that this is a rapidly growing economy sector, the value of which amounts to USD 4.86 billion in Poland, and USD 66.49 billion in Europe. Much attention was paid to the synergy of applications of these 3W resources. Commissioned by BGK, EY prepared the report.

The report was drawn up to collect the data regarding 3W sector and to confirm the real potential of the new economy sector that BGK had noticed earlier. During the press briefing, Beata Daszyńska-Muzyczka, the president of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and the initiator of 3W idea, presented the main conclusions from the report.

- When we were establishing the 3W initiative in 2021, we knew that the focus on the three resources was important. We could not be certain though, that first of all – we will build the 3W ecosystem that will bring together different milieus: scientific, business and public administration in such a short time span, and second of all – that the potential of the 3W sector is so great – even greater than we estimated – Beata Daszyńska-Muzyczka commented on the premiere of the report.

The 3W idea is the vision of the future. It is based on a few premises such as better access to drinking water and food, energy transformation towards zero emissions or physical and economic security. The 3W idea is based on the three resources that will be key for our future: water, hydrogen and carbon. In this vision the society gains thanks to the fact that the water resources are managed in a responsible way, hydrogen technologies are clean, and carbon materials – innovative.

The economy sector that is still growing

BGK’s interest in water, hydrogen and carbon results directly from the strategy of the bank – its mission is to support sustainable socio-economic development of our country. According to BGK, 3W is the answer to the challenges that the entire society is facing in the 21st century - energy transformation or security of access to drinking water, among others. The bank has precisely identified the opportunities the 3W idea and the market connected with it carry.

The in-depth analysis, that BGK commissioned from EY, shows that the value of 3W sector currently amounts to USD 4.86 billion in Poland, USD 66.49 billion in Europe and USD 236.6 billion in the world. In our country the highest growth is expected in carbon technologies sector by 2030 – by almost 9 per cent, and the value of the entire 3W market will grow up to USD 5.6 billion.

The report also refers to the synergy of applications of these three resources of the future. The bank stresses that their interdependence, the flagship example of which is electrolysis, is the key to the understanding of the 3W idea. According to the report, we can see the biggest impact of the synergy in industry, healthcare, housing and also infrastructure, transport and logistics, among others. 3W will also have influence on social and territorial cohesion.

As Beata Daszyńska-Muzyczka emphasized, the data comprised in the report will be the basis for making business decisions – not only for investors, but also for entrepreneurs, scientists and local government officials. The analysis indicates in which directions Polish economy should develop so as to be more and more competitive in Europe and in the world. This is the issue the initiators of 3W care most about.

2nd 3W Congress – three resources, one planet, joint responsibility

2nd 3W Congress was held in Warsaw on December 7-8. This was yet another event by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego within the 3W initiative that integrated the representatives of many milieus – the world of science, business and public sector. During these two days several hundred people, scientists, entrepreneurs, representatives of NGOs, public sector and financial institutions, among others, discussed the opportunities that 3W innovative technologies present. At the beginning of the event Krzysztof Kubów – the Secretary of State and Head of the Political Office of the President of the Council of Ministers, read the letter of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Tim Marshall – an expert in geopolitics and the author of the book “Prisoners of Geography” – was the special guest of this year’s congress.
