Reducing carbon emissions by 95 percent by 2030 - NRW.BANK joins the City of Münster’s alliance for climate protection

13 August 2024

NRW.BANK is now a partner in “Münsters Allianz für Klimaschutz – das Netzwerk der Unternehmen”, a corporate climate action alliance and network organised by the City of Münster. The promotional bank for North Rhine-Westphalia thus supports the City of Münster in reducing its carbon emissions by 95 percent by 2030 compared to the reference year 1990. This goal is in line with NRW.BANK’s own sustainability strategy – in particular the plan to continuously reduce the consumption of greenhouse gases and resources in North Rhine-Westphalia.

“It is our common responsibility to stop climate change or at least to mitigate it. We are pleased to be able to work together with the local economy towards this goal and at the same time strengthen the competitiveness of the corporate sector and the prosperity of the people,” says Eckhard Forst, Chairman of the Managing Board of NRW.BANK. “NRW.BANK will provide effective promotional impetus to strengthen the necessary transformation processes.” As a voluntary partner in the alliance, NRW.BANK will use the goals and actions it has set itself to continuously reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the consumption of energy and resources. Progress is controlled and monitored on a regular basis.

Sustainability is a key guiding principle for NRW.BANK and an important criterion for all its business decisions – from the design of its product range and advisory services to the implementation of individual financing transactions. For more than ten years, NRW.BANK has been committed to making its banking operations carbon-neutral. In this context, top priority is attached to avoiding emissions from being generated in the first place.

At the beginning of this year, NRW.BANK was awarded the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certificate, the European Union's strict seal of approval for verified environmental management. The EMAS certificate is awarded to companies and organisations that systematically improve their energy and material efficiency and reduce harmful environmental impacts and environment-related risks.

The measures taken support the City of Münster in achieving its climate protection target, the underlying master plan of which was adopted by the City in 2017. The slogan “Münster – Our Climate 2030” stands for a combination of offers, measures and actions for climate protection in Münster. More than 100 enterprises and institutions have already joined the alliance for climate protection. The network offers the member companies seminars, exchange and support on their way to a more climate-friendly and sustainable future.
